Transport Rules - Conditions | Actions | Exceptions

What a Transport Rules - They are a new feature included as a part of Exchange Server 2007. For any e-mails that come in, go out or routed via an Exchange 2007 organization, using Tranport Rules we can apply messaging policies, and varoius AV/AS restrictions as a part of policy compliance that we might want to place. Example: applying disclaimers to all outgoing e-mails.

As Trasnport Rules can be applied to Hub Transport Server or Edge Trasnport Server or both. While creating a transport rule there are three phases: Conditions, Actions and Exceptions.

Create a New Transport Rule

EMC | Organization Configuration | Hub Transport | In Actions Pane | New Transport Rule

In the New Transport Rule Wizard, fill out Name and Description | Check Enable Rule | Click Next

The following conditions will be available, select the appropriate condition

Transport Rules - Conditions
Between members of distribution list and distribution list
From people
From a member of distribution list
From user inside or outside the organization
Sent to people
Sent to a member of distribution list
Set to user inside or outside organization
Marked with classification
Mark with importance
When any of the recipients in the To field is people
When any of the recipients in the To field is a member of distribution list
When any of the recipients in the Cc field is people
When any of the recipients in the Cc field is a member of distribution list
When any of the recipients in the To or Cc field is people
When any of the recipients in the To or Cc field is a member of distribution list
When the subject field contains specific words
When the subject field or body of the message contains specific words
When a message header contains specific words
When the from address contains specific words
When the subject field contains specific words
When the subject field or the body of the message contains text pattern
When the message header contains text pattern
When the from address contains text pattern
When any attachment file name contains text patterns
When a spam confidence level (SCL) rating that is greater than or equal to limit
When the size of any attachment is greater than or equal to limit


Click Next

The following actions will be available, select the appropriate action

Transport Rules - Actions
Apply message classification
Append disclaimer text using font,size,color, with separator and fallback to action if unable to apply
Add a recipient in the To field addresses
Blind carbon copy (Bcc) the message to addresses
Copy the message to addresses
Log an event with message
Prepped the subject with string
Remove header
Redirect the message to addresses
Set the spam confidence level to value
Set header with value
Send bounce message to sender with enhanced status code
Silently drop the message


Click Next

The following exceptions will be available, select the appropriate exception

Except when the message is from
Except when the message is from members of distro list
Except when the message is from users inside or outside the org
Except when the message sent to people
Except when the message is sent to a member of distro list
Except when the message is sent to users inside or outside the org
Except when the message is sent between members of distro lst an distro list
Except when any of the rcpt is the to field is people
Except when any of the rcpt in the to field is a member of disto list
Except when any of the rcpt in the Cc field is people
Except when any of the rcp in the Cc field is a member of distro list
Except when any of the rcpt in the To field or Cc field is people
Except when any of the rcpt in the To field or Cc field is a member of distro list
Except when the message is marked as classification
Except when the text specific words appears in the subject
Except when the text specific words appears in the subject or body
Except when the text specific words appears in a message header
Except when the from address contains specific words
Except when the text pattern appears in the subject
Except when the text pattern appears in the subject or body of the message
Except when the text pattern appears in the header
Except when the text pattern appears when the from address contains text patterns
Except when the text pattern appears in any attachment file name
Except when the SCL that is greater than or = to limit
Except when the size of the any attachment is greater than or = to limit
Except when the message is marked as importance


Click Next

The final screen of the wizard shows the Powershell cmdlet that was run in the background to create the new rule

Click Finish | The Transport Rule has been created.....

Summary:

We saw the various options available under Condition, Actions, Exceptions under Transport Rules. The feel is similar to creating Outlook rules
