Why Exchange 2007 is not supported on Windows Server 2008 R2?

This has been one of the most common questions that has been doing the rounds in Forums and general discussions I am part of. Some facts:

  • Exchange 2007 SP2 does not even allow installation on Windows Server 2008 R2, and Setup will abort/fail at prerequisites.
  • Exchange 2007 SP1 with some work arounds was possible to install on Windows Server 2008 R2, but not a supported scenario, so if you have workarounds, keep them to test environments only.

Now, there have been a few reasons given:

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 ships with Powershell 2.0, which Exchange 2007 does not support or integrate with. From an Exchange perspective that is the key difference between Server 2008 & R2. Exchange 2007 SP1 is supported on Windows Server 2008 SP2 as it runs with Powershell 1.0.
  • Another logic according to Michael Atalla, Group Product Manager in the UG Group at Microsoft, is lack of resources. “We are focusing our resources on getting Exchange Server 2010, which will be fully tested and supported on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, customer ready to be released later this year.” Refer: http://www.expta.com/2009/07/exchange-2007-wont-be-coming-to-r2.html

Hope this does give you some base to ponder over !
